GO CONNOR!

Stick around after the A/W Futurity on Saturday and catch an Oaklawn fave.  Connor is 20-1 ML and likes to win off of a layoff (he did in March).  Extra points if it’s a muddy track!

Also, in the feature, is it me or does “Malibu Maverick” sound like a good nickname for John “7 Houses” McCain?

TRIFECTA!BATTLE ROYALE HEATS UP LIKE AN AUGUST AFTERNOON!!!SAUHBR Week 3 RESULTS!

The SAUHBR action kicked it up a notch this past weekend, leaving Borderland Totalisator and me in a dead-heat for Total (amateur) Handicapping Domination – 65-65!!

YEHAW!!  TRIFECTA, BABY!  1st TRI in SAUHBR was hit by yours truly in the Secretariat Stakes!  Winchester (1)-by daylight-Plan (2)-Tizdejavu(1)!!  Winchester’s victory was so visually impressive he’s going into my new fave category, and the final time wasn’t that bad, either -2:01:76.  TRIPLE POINT BONUS! 12 points!!

But that’s not all — In the Beverly D, Mauralakana (4) and Communique (1) galloped under the wire for an EXACTA!! YESS!  DOUBLE BONUS! 10 points!

Then, as I predicted, the Million was the Euros’ race to lose — they swept the top 3 spots.  Spirit One lead them wire to wire, with Archipenko (2) and Mount Nelson (1) rounding out the tri.  I didn’t hit the winner, but I *did* get the place/show.  Stream Cat was 6th behind Einstein — the best US placing was 4th finisher Silverfoot, who may just have taken my advice on that John Henry juju.  3 points!

BT, on the other hand, didn’t have such stellar luck at Arlington — Tizdejavu got him 1 pt in the Sec, he was shut out in the Bev D, and Archipenko won him a point in the Million.  What happened to you, Glen?

Sunday’s 2yo Sprint Stakes were a little Crazier but I still did pretty decent with the picks …  BUT!  I have a Scoring Q that must wait ’till BT gets back to his computer!!

GRASS & GO: Arlington Million XXVI/ Two-Year-Old SPRINTS! +SAUHBR Week3 PICKS

My race choices this weekend are polar opposites: Gr1 Turf classics on Saturday at Arlington, and Two-Year-Old Sprints on dirt/poly on Sunday!  Whee!

This year’s Million looks to be a Euro romp, unless by some chance Silverfoot catches the Jambalaya/Tin Man/John Henry spirit and pulls a major upset.  Archipenko is the early fave, with Einstein leading the US contingent.  But here are my picks:

1)Mount Nelson
2)Archipenko
3)Stream Cat

alt: Einstein

Mount Nelson just won a hard-fought Coral Eclipse stakes and O’Brien has been on fire this year.  Archipenko will give him a run, but I see the son of The Rock pulling through.  Einstein has to do scads better than he has in his last 2 to even get close to the Euros.  Stream Cat actually won his last out, at Arlington, so I give him an edge over the Scientist.

Beverly D.

1)Mauralakana
2)Precious Kitten
3)Communique

alt: Ciao

Secretariat Stakes

1)Plan
2)Tizdejavu
3)Winchester

alt:Snoose Goose

SUNDAY: SUPER SPEEDY FUTURITY DAY

BEST PAL STAKES Gr2 Del Mar:

1)Captain Steel
2)Azul Leon
3)Charlie’s Moment

alt: S.S. STone

VANDAL Stakes Woodbine:

1)Silver Rocket
2)El Brujo
3)Bucephalus

alt: Win and Reign

Man, this turned out to be a short field.  The top three look pretty well matched, but Silver Rocket had the best workout.

Northwest Stallion STRONG RULER Stakes Emerald Downs:

1)Burgundy Road
2)Enumerator
3)Toss’Em Again

alt: Nickel Nickel

Man O War Stakes Gr1 Turf — CURLIN vs GRASS

Salute the Sarge, photo by Benoit Photo

Salute the Sarge, photo by Benoit Photo

Saturday’s running of the Man O’War at Belmont is the 35th anniversary of Secretariat’s victory in 1973, the Triple Crown winner’s turf debut.  Secretariat defeated Tentam and Big Spruce by a devastating margin, and many horsemen said afterwards that Big Red was better on turf than dirt.  This year, reigning Horse of the Year, CURLIN, will try his luck on the emerald track.  If he succeeds, owner Jess Jackson will send the chestnut colt out of the country, to France for the Arc.  Despite Curlin’s powerful victories on dirt, he’s no sure thing on the grass.  His field this time around is not the easy pickings he faced in the STephen Foster — 2 previous Breeders’ Cup Turf winners are in to make Curlin sweat.  Better Talk Now, winner in 2004, is the most experienced in the field and, at 9 years old, is looking to make history as the race’s oldest winner.  Red Rocks won the BC Turf in 2006 (the year I attended & I saw this horse up close! woot! /fangirlfreakout) but is lightly raced and has not won since May, in an allowance in Europe.  Also in are Mission Approved, the speed in the field; True Cause, a Godolphin hopeful; Sudan, Bobby Frankel’s trainee; and Grand Courtier, winner of last year’s Sword Dancer Stks under Calvin Borel.

Curlin is still the horse to beat – if anybody is gonna do it I think Sudan can (it’s the Frankel), with Grand COurtier coming on for 3rd.  Better Talk Now & Red Rocks, while talented in previous years, have lost a few steps and it would be a surprise to me if either one ran away with the field.  Still and all, a great race that I will actually get to watch LIVE! on TV.

OTHER RACES:

POKER HANDICAP: KIP DEVILLE returns, but I like TAM LIN better.  Sensational Humor to show.

PRINCESS ROONEY Gr1: 1)DREAM RUSH 2)LOOKY YONDER 3)MIRACULOUS MISS

CARRY BACK STakes Gr2: 1) SALUTE THE SARGE 2)GENTLEMAN JAMES 3)CARSON’S LEGACY

AZALEA Stakes Gr3: 1) DANCING ALLSTAR 2)GRAND OBSESSION 3)DITES MOI

SWAPS Gr2: 1)COL. JOHN 2)TWO STEP SALSA 3)NOWNOWNOW

AMERICAN DERBY Gr2: 1)BLUE EXIT 2)TIZDEJAVU 3)BOSS LAFITTE

ARLINGTON HNDCP Gr3: 1)COSMONAUT 2)STREAM CAT 3)DISTORTED REALITY

DELAWARE OAKS Gr2: 1)PROUD SPELL 2)SHE’S ALL ELTISH 3)MAREN’S MEADOW

DELAWARE HNDCP Gr2: 1)HYSTERICALADY 2)UNBRIDLED BELLE 3)BUY THE BARREL

And that’s it for me…it’s too late and I’m too tired to do all the stakes this weekend.  WATCH CURLIN ON ESPNEWS SATURDAY!!!
