I love Belmont. It’s the site of the greatest Triple Crown race in history, the 31-length, 2:24, 1973 jaw-dropper victory by Secretariat. It’s also the home of Easy Goer’s triumphs, Forego’s heroics, and the place where, mere weeks after 9/11, the city of New York pulled itself together to host a global sporting event in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup. Nothing of that magnitude is scheduled for the weekend, but there are some really good races on tap, as usual.
SUBURBAN HANDICAP G1:
1)SOLAR FLARE – LArry Jones trains this Argentine-bred for Fox Hill Farms and this is the type of race where new stars pop up every year.
2)AP Arrow
3)Frost Giant
Mother Goose STakes Gr1:
1)PROUD SPELL – Will follow up her KY Oaks win here
2)Hamsa
3)Never Retreat
I’d love to see Jones pull a double here & silence his detractors — he got the worst of it for Eight Belles’s breakdown, unfairly. He’s a good guy, and this weekend he’ll show up big time.
